Job Description

The Recreation Therapist plans and implements recreational activities for youth, promoting healthy leisure, socialization, and skill development.

Essential functions include creating diverse programs (arts, sports, community trips), supervising facilities to ensure safety, documenting progress, participating in treatment teams, and supervising activities for up to three youth.

Qualifications require a Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Physical Education, or related fields, with at least 1 year of youth recreation experience. For OMH-funded programs, a Master’s degree and CTRS credential are required. Certifications such as CPR and Lifeguard may be needed.

Must demonstrate knowledge of recreation activities, youth engagement, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques. The role requires strong interpersonal skills, ethical conduct, and the ability to work independently and within teams.
