Job Description

The Recreation Therapist plans, organizes, and supervises recreational activities to promote healthy leisure, socialization, and skill development for youth in a human services setting.

  • Develops and implements diverse programs including arts, sports, drama, and community trips aligned with treatment goals.
  • Assists youth through positive role modeling and skill-building for overall growth.
  • Maintains safety and cleanliness of recreation facilities, performing inspections and basic repairs.
  • Supervises recreational activities for up to three youth, documents progress, and participates in treatment team meetings.
  • Contributes to event planning and service plan reviews, with additional duties as assigned.

  • Qualifications include a bachelor’s (or master’s with CTRS certification for OMH-funded programs) in Therapeutic Recreation or related field, with relevant youth recreation experience. Certifications such as CPR and potentially lifeguard are required. Skills include youth engagement, conflict resolution, and de-escalation techniques. The role requires an NYS driver’s license, ability to work independently and within a team, and a commitment to professional ethics.

    This full-time position offers benefits including health insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and more, based in Auburn, NY. Relocation and in-person work are required. The pay rate ranges from $19.50 to $28.00 per hour.
